Other Detox Food

Here is teh list of some other important foods which has to be included in your diet.

Alfalfa
High in a fibre called plantix, alfalfa has the ability to bind to toxins including some drugs and food additives. This isn't the only benefit, as it is also rich in the minerals, amino acids and fatty acids our body needs for good health and detoxing.

Asparagus
Rich in vitamin C, asparagus is also packed with fibre and the antioxidant rutin, as well as being another rich source of glutathione. Research at the Vegetable Research Unit at Cornell University, USA, shows that it stimulates the kidneys and bowel, increasing the rate at which toxins leave the body.

Bananas
Exceptionally high in minerals, bananas can reduce the uptake of heavy metals. Bananas also provide potassium, which helps to regulate fluid in the body and reduce fluid retention. The less fluid you retain the more toxins you excrete.

Bran cereals
A bowl of bran cereal contains 15g (Vfoz) of fibre - half the recommended daily amount. This is great for detox, because fibre cleans the bowel and stimulates its movements, decreasing the time food spends there and so reducing the risk of toxin reabsorption. Wholegrain cereals have also been proven to contain high levels of antioxidants.

Brazil nuts
The antioxidant nutrient selenium is a vital detox nutrient because it neutralizes free radicals created in the body, particularly those caused by smoking. We used to get selenium in our diet from vegetables, but levels in soil are now low. Brazil nuts are therefore the best source. Just two contain the 50mg we need daily.

Carrots
Vital sources of the antioxidants alpha- and beta-carotene, carrots also seem to be able to mop up heavy metals in the body. They also reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, which, in turn, lowers the risk of arterial furring and promotes heart health.

Eggs
These are important because they contain high levels of a substance called lecithin, which helps improve fat digestion in the body (this aids the liver) and also improves liver function. Eggs also include a detoxifier called cysteine, which is particularly potent against alcohol.

Tofu
As well as being a healthy low-fat source of protein, tofu seems to have the ability to bind to heavy metals. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health in the USA found lead levels were 11 per cent less in the bodies of people who ate 700g (11/2lb) of tofu a week.

Water
We need water to flush toxins through our system, yet most of us spend the day dehydrated. You've probably heard that eight glasses of water a day is the required amount, but just aim to drink a glass of something as often as you can. Remember that it's not just plain water that hydrates us - milk is 84 per cent water, decaffeinated cola is 99 per cent water and herbal teas are 99 per cent water. They all work. You can also eat high-water foods like watermelon, celery, cucumber, pears and grapes to boost your water supply and also provide vitamins.
